“Obviously, that’s power”

The January riots in Kazakhstan were a planned operation – essentially a terrorist one – with the involvement of militants from abroad. This was stated by the head of the republic Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. At the same time, he admitted that this was preceded by truly peaceful protests of citizens, and the country’s authorities “lost in terms of information.” In addition, Tokayev said that there were no preconditions from Russia when the CSTO forces were brought in. The current president of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, said on Saturday that rioters seized the Alma-Ata airport in early January to bring militants who arrived under the guise of guest workers through it. The head of the republic spoke about this in an interview with the Khabar-24 TV channel , aired on January 29.
“You probably noticed that the militants organized the seizure of the airport in Alma-Ata.
Now the investigation shows that the airport was seized in order to ensure the passage through it of citizens who arrived from one Central Asian city, these were trained militants, commanders. Naturally, they flew in under the guise of guest workers, they were led through the border posts, launched into the city and began to lead the operation,” the head of state says .
He added that those who led the attacks on administrative buildings during the riots were interested in dossiers on law enforcement officers . “These people, of course, were not interested in material values. They led attacks on administrative buildings, they were interested in criminal cases, dossiers on law enforcement officers.
It was a carefully planned operation, essentially terrorist, with the involvement of militants from abroad,” Tokayev said.
“Fakes flowed like a river”
The President acknowledged that the country’s authorities lost in terms of information in the period of unrest, planned, according to his estimates, by professionals.
“I think that it was a planned action, and all stages of the riots – starting with peaceful protests, they really were, and ending with murders, looting. It was a complete operation, conceived by professionals and executed by them.
As for peaceful demonstrations, naturally they took place. There was not and could not be any use of force against the demonstrators,” Tokayev explained.
According to him, many militants left Alma-Ata after the riots, including those who went to neighboring countries. “Someone disappeared into the countryside, someone moved across the border, went to neighboring republics, someone disguised themselves in a different way and went underground. There are facts when they shave their beards, change their appearance, turn into civilians,” the leader of the republic said.
“Information we lost, but not before that. We are all smart in hindsight, but at that time it was hardly possible to think about who would say what about us. In such cases, the Internet is turned off not only in Kazakhstan, but also in a number of countries, because unscrupulous people use it for their own purposes. It should be noted that among the commanders of the bandit formations there were people who were very well specially trained in information, that is, there was a disinformation campaign – the so-called fakes flowed like water, ”the president noted, adding that the bandits’ attack against Kazakhstan was carefully prepared.
“Russia for Kazakhstan is a union state”
According to him, the Russian authorities did not put forward any preconditions before sending the CSTO forces to Kazakhstan.
“I responsibly say that there were no conversations with Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, and there were many of them, and they were lengthy, about the fact that we, they say, will pay off later, naturally, there was no. And there were no preconditions from the Kremlin either. In the end, Russia for Kazakhstan is a union state,” Tokayev said, answering a question about rumors that after the CSTO forces were sent to Kazakhstan, the republic would be forced to make some concessions to the Russian Federation.
He stressed that the CSTO contingent did not fire a single shot during the mission in Kazakhstan.
“The involvement of the CSTO peacekeeping contingent was carried out in accordance with the contractual documents of this organization. The CSTO peacekeeping contingent, having arrived in Kazakhstan, did not fire a single shot. From the very beginning, an agreement was reached that this contingent would perform the functions of support, that is, the protection of strategic facilities. We will deal with the rest of the questions. We needed a rear,” the head of state explained.
According to him, the very news of the arrival of the peacekeeping contingent in Kazakhstan played an important psychological and intimidating role for the bandits.
“It is clear that this is a force. By the way, this is a joint peacekeeping contingent. There, besides Russia, there were military units of Belarus, Tajikistan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan,” Tokayev stated.
“No bargaining with Nazarbayev”
The incumbent president said that there was no bargaining with the first head of state, Nursultan Nazarbayev, during the period of unrest, only the issue of the status of the chairman of the Security Council was decided.
“No, there was no bargaining, of course. There was also no talk of personal privileges. The only thing was that it was necessary to urgently resolve the issue of the status of the chairman of the Security Council, and when the situation escalated, I will not hide it, I raised the question that I would now address the nation and must declare that from now on I am the chairman Security Council,” Tokayev said.
He added that this issue was resolved literally on the go. “On January 28, the congress of the Nur Otan party took place, and I spoke there and assessed the historical role of Nursultan Abishevich Nazarbayev . I believe that this assessment is objective, and I hope that it is this assessment, this characteristic that people will be guided by in the future,” the president believes.
Tokayev also said that he was thinking about reforming the parliamentary and party systems in Kazakhstan. According to him, there should be several strong parties in the parliament, it is necessary to educate politicians.
“As the head of state, I said this at the congress of the Nur Otan party, I think that I should stand somewhat above all public-party and political structures, serve as a kind of magnet to bring various socio-political forces to a common denominator,” he concluded.
