‘There is no alternative to Trump’

The United States is summing up the interim results of the storming and seizure of the Capitol by supporters of ex-President Donald Trump, which took place exactly one year ago, unprecedented in the history of the country. The results of numerous investigations are still unknown, while experts believe that the future of the next congressional elections and the 2024 presidential race depends on them. Why the events of the beginning of last year remain the main political news in the United States – in the material of “Gazeta.Ru”.
The investigation continues
A year after the storming of the Capitol by supporters of ex-President Donald Trump, the US authorities arrested more than 700 people. “As of today, we have arrested and indicted more than 725 individuals in nearly all 50 states and the District of Columbia for their roles in the January 6 attack,” Justice Secretary and Attorney General Merrick Garland said yesterday. At the same time, according to him, the investigative measures have not yet been completed. “The actions we have taken so far will not be our last,” Garland said, adding that everyone involved in the assault would be held accountable.
“The Justice Department remains committed to holding accountable under the law all those responsible for the January 6 events at all levels, whether they were present that day (during the storming of the Capitol) or were otherwise criminally responsible for the attack on our democracy,” he stressed. …
The Attorney General’s statement was made on the eve of the first anniversary of the unprecedented action for the United States.
On January 6, 2020, supporters of the then still incumbent President Donald Trump, refusing to believe in the defeat of their candidate in the presidential election, stormed the Congress building, interrupting a meeting at which the electoral college was supposed to approve the results of the vote count.
A crowd of protesters broke into parliament buildings, ransacked offices and put the congressmen on the run. As a result of the incident, five people were killed, among them – a protester shot by the police and a Capitol police officer. More than 50 police officers were injured, 68 protesters were arrested. Donald Trump, who expressed his support for the protesters on Twitter, was blocked on all social networks.
American politicians described these events as high treason, rebellion, an act of domestic terrorism and an attempted coup d’état. Investigative actions began almost immediately. The Congressional Commission began its own investigation of the incident, but its results have not yet been released – new details are constantly appearing in the case. For example, a few weeks ago, the commission became interested in Trump’s phone call, which he made several hours before the start of the riots. According to The Guardian , on the night of January 5, he called from the White House to some of his subordinates at the Willard Hotel in Washington and urged them to “find ways to prevent Congress from officially confirming the results of the presidential election.”
At the end of December, CNN , citing its own sources, reported that the Special Committee of the US House of Represent-atives to investigate the sto-rming of the Capitol would release its final report only in the fall of 2022, and an interim report would appear only by the summer.
Was there a crime at all?
According to Andrei Korotkov, professor of political science at the University of Tennessee, the events of January 6 are assessed by everyone “in accordance with their party affiliation and emotional attitude.”
“Both sides are trying to interpret those events in different ways. Most Republicans say the action was outrage over suspicions that the election results were unfair. The Democrats are trying to present everything in such a way as to discredit both Trump and the Republicans in general, “Korotkov explained to Gazeta.Ru. He also recalled that representatives of the Democratic Party refused to include representatives of the Republican Party, whom she proposed, in the commission of the Congress.
“Purely nominally, they included two Republicans who personally hate Trump. They take an even more hateful stance towards Tru-mp than most Democrats.
And this commission is trying in every possible way to prove that there was an attempt at an armed coup, which was personally led by Trump, in order, firstly, to discredit the ex-president, and secondly, to deprive him of the opportunity to run for elections in 2024, “Korotkov added.
Korotkov himself is sure that there are no signs of organized action in the events of January 6. “It is clear that all this was not prepared, since there were no weapons or attempts to organize themselves. It was such an emotional outburst, ”the professor emphasized.
Alexander Domrin, professor at the Faculty of Law at the Higher School of Economics and Americanist , believes that on January 6, 2022, there was no storming – “just a group of peacefully-minded citizens entered parliament.” “I have been to the US Congress many times . Unlike the Russian State Duma , there is direct access to parliament. Absolutely anyone can enter a building, enter a meeting of the House of Representatives. This is not the case when Democrats talk about a takeover. There was no capture, “Domrin said in an interview with Gazeta.Ru. He also recalled: there is no evidence that Trump provoked his supporters to riot.
“There, the police killed four people and one policeman who was hit with a fire extinguisher died. But on the whole it was a peaceful, non-violent action. But they need to be accused of domestic terrorism, for which the United States is punished very harshly. This is a consequence of the split of American society into supporters and opponents of Trump, ”the expert added.
Why is this still important?
According to Professor Korotkov of the University of Tennessee, the rhetoric of the Democrats directly depends on the decline in the popularity of Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Their approval ratings fell to their all-time lows of 43% and 44%, respectively, according to the latest Gallup poll.
“In fact, we see an increasing polarization of opinions, both in Congress and among the elites and in the country as a whole, and regarding the events of January 6, and regarding the personality of Trump,” the expert added.
Sociological data, according to Korotkov, speak of the impending crushing defeat of the Democrats in the presidential elections in 2024.
The professor also noted that preparations for the mid-term congressional elections are already underway in US political circles – primaries are underway, fundraising is underway. And many Democrats, who could well apply for a seat in parliament, are already declaring their candidacy withdrawn. “The reason is clear – they are afraid that Biden will drag them into the abyss with him,” Korotkov said.
In addition, he said, many Democrats do not want an open confrontation with Trump.
“It is clear that Trump is very strong and that he continues to be popular with ordinary American voters, and this frightens not only the Democrats, but also the Republican elites themselves.
If Trump manages to get his candidates through the primaries and then help them win the elections, it will give him even greater control over the party and strengthen him personally in the confidence that he can win the 2024 elections. The Republican Party really wants Trump to help it win the congressional elections, but it really doesn’t want him to become their candidate for the presidential elections in 2024, ”Korotkov explained.
Alexander Domrin, for his part, noted that Trump’s prospects of returning to the presidency of the United States are still vague, but there is still no alternative to him in the Republican Party. “There is not a single more or less bright personality comparable to Trump among the Republicans,” Domrin said.
