In the United States, a tax investigation agai-nst Hunter Biden, the president’s son, is gaining momentum. He is suspected of receiving money fr-om the Ukrainian gas c-ompany Burisma. Donald Trump, who is in full swing preparing for the 2024 election campaign, has drawn attention to the case. How this will turn out for the current head of the White House, RIA Novosti understood.
Bad habits and mental state
“Officers at the US Atto-rney’s Office in Delaware have requested additional information about the income that (Hunter) Biden received from the Ukrainian gas company Burisma Holdings Ltd,” The Wall Street Journal reports . Already interrogated one of the partners of the son of the American leader. Interested in bad habits, spending and Hunter’s mental state in 2018. The investigation was traditionally launched by former President Trump.
“(Prosecutors) are looking into whether he (Hunter) violated tax or other laws, including those governing lobbying for foreign governments, in business dealings in Ukraine, China, Kazakhstan and other countries,” the newspaper writes.
Other data also surfaced: possible evidence of Biden Jr.’s involvement in funding biological laboratories in Ukraine. The British newspaper Daily Mail presented emails confirming that he helped the medical company Metabiota win multi-million dollar contracts from the US government to research deadly pathogens.
The documents say the firm provided services to Pentagon contractor Black & Veatch. It was she, according to the materials, who built biolaboratories in Ukraine to “study infectious agents or toxins that can be transmitted through the air and cause potentially fatal infections.”
Biden Jr. is reported to have brought Metabiota to-gether with Ukrainian energy company Burisma Hold-ings. Together they implemented a “scientific project”, which attracted laboratories of an increased level of biosecurity in Ukraine.
Family financial scandal
The Delaware prosecutor’s office began investigating Biden Jr.’s tax cases at the height of his father’s election campaign. Hunter himself assured that he “conducted business in a lawful and proper manner, including with the help of professional tax consultants.” Joseph Biden was “very proud of his son,” who “went through the crucible of trials and fought vicious personal attacks that only made him stronger.”
Hunter, however, brought a lot of trouble to his father and mother: problems with alcohol and drugs, a scandalous divorce, an affair with the widow of his older brother Bo, who died of cancer.
But if the personal life of Biden Jr. was preferred not to be touched, then the scandalous case of the Ukrainian gas company Burisma scattered in the media. Hunter served on the Board of Directors of Burisma from 2014 to 2019. At that time, Joseph Biden, who served as vice president, was involved in shaping the Ukrainian direction of American politics.
At the disposal of the media was a letter written in January 2017 by Hunter’s business partner Eric Schwerin, who was then president of Rosemont Seneca Partners, founded by Biden Jr. In the message, he said that Hunter did not report on his 2014 tax return the amount of $400,000 received for his work at Burisma. Schwerin advised his partner to “make additions” to the tax returns.
Hunter’s cooperation with Chinese partners also raised questions from investigators. They were suspected of money laundering and tax crimes.
The case was handled by FBI agents, employees of the Criminal Division of the US Internal Revenue Service. Another personal correspondence of the president’s son got into the network, from which it became clear that a certain Chinese billionaire paid him ten million dollars a year simply for access to important contacts.

The Burisma case played a role in the 2020 presidential campaign. Trump hyped the story, assuring that Biden is a biased politician: the interests of his son influenced the Ukrainian direction of Washington.
Joseph turned the situation to his advantage. The Democrats presented the accusations as an attempt by Trump to find compromising evidence on a rival – the American leader put pr-essure on Ukrainian Presid-ent Volodymyr Zelensky so that the Burisma case was investigated in a way that was unfavorable for Biden. The 45th President of the United States was impea-ched but later acquitted.
Several criminal cases were initiated against Burisma, but they were never completed. Trump then scolded the American media for putting the Hunter story on the brakes. And yet the story is back in the spotlight of the media.
“Trump decided to put her back on the agenda: this plays into the hands of the Republicans before the fall congressional elections. The ex-president loves attention and negative PR. The Republicans put Biden in a negative light, they say, he can’t even deal with his family, let alone with the country, he’s unclean on hand, covers contacts with Russia. In general, they are trying to finish him off, believing that he is now rather weak in foreign policy, “says Anastasia Bunina, junior researcher at the Primakov Center for North American Studies at IMEMO RAS. A new round of investigation into the Hunter Biden case is connected with preparations for the presidential campaign of 2024, points out the head of the center, Victoria Zhuravleva.
“This is a personal game of Donald Trump, who would like to be re-elected. He is using the current situation. Ukraine is constantly on the lips, besides, Biden has a very low trust rating now. And then it’s time to throw in something to enlist the support of the electorate for the future. Trump actively comments on the actions of Russia and Biden, trying to return to the game,” the political scientist explains.
However, Zhuravleva doubts that this will harm the Democrats in the fall congressional elections. Former tax attorney Matt Mueller said the government’s actions make it clear they want a trial. However, it is not a fact that Biden Jr. will soon be charged. This means that the situation will not affect Biden Sr. much either.
