UN Day 2021
United Nations Day has been celebrated annually on October 24 since 1948. Th-is year this important date is celebrated for the 74th time. The decision to introduce the holiday was made a year earlier – in October 1947. Then the UN General Assembly, by a separate re-solution, established the an-nual celebration of the UN Day. In 1971, by another r-esolution, the General A-ssembly proclaimed the ho-liday an international event. It is celebrated by residents and leaders of more than 190 countries that make up the organization. Russia , being a member of the UN, also takes part in the events. In 2021, they are held at a variety of venues created within the framework of this organization. In particular, at UNESCO , WHO , IAEA and IMF… Anyone can join the festive events.
History of the holiday
The history of UN Day is inextricably linked with the emergence of the organization itself. She replaced the League of Nations , created following the First World War. The Second World War forced humanity and political elites to take a fresh look at the existing world order after the bloodiest massacre in the history of mankind. The League of Nations existed until 1946, but immediately after the end of hostilities, representatives of 50 countries gathered in San Francisco at the United Nations Conference on the creation of an appropriate international organization and its Charter. However, its first contours were outlined at a conference at the Dumbarton Oaks mansion in Washington in the fall of 1944. In two sessions, the United States , the United Kingdom and USSRagreed on the goals, structure and functions of the world organization. The second meeting took place in February 1945 in Yalta . And already in April 1945, the mentioned historic meeting took place in San Francisco. The work was based on proposals from Great Britain, China , the Soviet Union and the United States. The charter was signed in June 1945 by representatives of fifty countries. Then Poland joined them . The participating countries for the entry into force of the Charter had to provide ratified instruments. This was done on October 24, 1945. From that moment, the countdown of the existence of the UN began. And it was this number that became the date of the United Nations Day.
Celebration events are held every year for a week. In Russia, speeches of officials and political figures are organized these days. Currently, the UN, despite enormous difficulties, continues to work to maintain international peace and security, as well as to provide humanitarian assistance, protect human rights and uphold the norms of international law. During the celebration of UN Day, special attention of the world community is drawn to the tasks facing the organization today: the eradication of poverty, ensuring the environmental protection of our planet and improving the quality of life of the population. These sustainable development goals for the next 15 years were supported by all UN member states in 2015.
Traditionally, from year to year, UN Day is celebrated by organizing the presentation of various awards and festive concerts. Prizes and medals are awarded for innovation and creativity, for gender equality and parity, for the implementation of ideas for effective work and development of the planet and individual states. Festive events necessarily include meetings, meetings, discussion round tables, exhibitions. An international concert is taking place in the UN General Assembly Hall. Many different official and unofficial meetings, educational actions are held, which are designed to more deeply familiarize the world community with the goals and achievements of the UN. From time to time, special events are organized, at which representatives of the countries of the United Nations Organization use electronic devices to communicate with different cities of the world and hold teleconferences.
